Elisabetta Flumeri
& Gabriella Giacometti
A seasoned creative duo. They met at 18 in a French class — and have never been apart since, neither in writing nor in life.
Elisabetta Flumeri and Gabriella Giacometti have been a seasoned creative duo for years. They made their debut as authors of romance novels and photo-novels, then moved on to writing for radio, advertising and magazines for women and young readers. They published several guides for the Oscar Mondadori series and later worked as television screenwriters on long-running serials, tackling a range of genres: from comedy to romance, from crime to period drama.
At the same time they work as editors and supervisors of TV drama and teach creative-writing courses. Since 2013 they have returned to publishing with Sperling & Kupfer — the rights to L'amore è un bacio di dama have been bought by the USA, Spain, Germany, the UK, Poland, France, Bulgaria and Israel — and Emma Books.
In September 2013 they founded EWWA, the European Writing Women Association. In 2015 they were named ambassadors for We Women for EXPO. In 2019 Amazon Publishing released Chiedi al passato, the second volume of the Emma&Kate crime series.
Never were words more prophetic.
A little about us
A conversation, in two voices
Everything that follows is drawn from their own words. They tell their story the way they write: taking turns, finishing each other's sentences.
Some encounters change your life. A cliché? Maybe. And yet in our case that is exactly what happened. We were 18. She was an actress, rehearsing late into the night in damp, dark basements, and by day she studied at university: history of theatre. I was enrolled in humanities, modern history; I organised 'meetings with historians', I read only 'highbrow' literature, and at the cinema only strictly European auteurs.
But at night I devoured Angélique and Gone with the Wind, even if I would not have admitted it under torture. We met by chance at a French class. I remember Gabriella coming towards me with her hand outstretched, saying…
— Hi, I'm Gabriella, and you?
— Elisabetta.
— And what's your star sign?
— Scorpio.
— Really? Me too! I can feel we're going to be friends…
Never were words more prophetic.
I trust my instincts. Always. And I was right. But in that moment I didn't know my life would take a different path from the one I imagined. Theatre was my passion. I had always dreamed of treading the boards, and I had made it. But at the same time I was a voracious reader: reading has always been an indispensable life force for me.
«We were just two girls
with too many dreams and no plan.»
…who, on the other hand, had never thought of doing anything else in life. I know it may sound presumptuous, but a passion is a passion. From the moment I picked up my first book, I discovered a love of reading. The love of writing came right after. At seven I wrote my first fairy tale, which the teacher read aloud to the class. Even then I demanded she get it published!
I can say I always had clear ideas and a precise goal: to become a writer. But not even I imagined I would write as part of a duo…
Instead, such a strong bond grew between us that it felt natural to think of doing something together. We were both aware that neither historical studies nor theatre would let us 'earn our bread and butter', as they say in Rome. We had no contacts, no backing… in short, no connections!
But we were full of ideas, driven and determined to make it with a job that was creative and fun. Two dreamers, yes, but pragmatic and down to earth. Those were the boom years of romance novels, and one day Elisabetta said to me: 'Why don't we try writing one?'. Given our feminist background, we had never read any, but we got ourselves ready: we bought a great many of them, studied them, took them apart, and built our own once we had worked out the structure — empirically but… scientifically!
…and the answer was invariably the same: 'Have you published anything yet?'. We would hang up disheartened. Then we met a wonderful woman, Ivanka Veltroni, Walter's mother, introduced to us by Lidia Ravera. She too wrote romance novels, as a hobby. She too had never published. She suggested we present a 'package' to publishers — the first true seed of a 'network'.
Her faith gave us back the enthusiasm that had dimmed a little. We split up the phone calls… more doors were slammed in our faces, but we didn't give up, and finally one day I got a call:
“This is Anna Giusti, from the Intimità imprint at Cino del Duca Editore. We liked your novel — when can you come to Milan to sign the contract?”
I admit it, I had to sit down. It was one of the strongest emotions of my life. 'Un sogno di cristallo' was our first book. That is how it began, and since then we have never stopped.
«Our number-one 'creation' —
and everything that came after.»
Made in Italy has always been an obsession of ours… so much so that after romance we moved on to Lancio photo-novels — made in Italy par excellence and a great workshop for learning how to build stories, even with the limits of immovable constraints. Still, as a screenwriter friend of ours says, it is a fine challenge to slip something new through the obligatory meshes of the genre…
And we love a challenge! We like to put ourselves on the line — it's a rush of adrenaline that's hard to give up. That is why, at a certain point, we left photo-novels too and threw ourselves into new adventures. First came radio, then advertising for a big agency, Ata Univas, which wanted to hire us as copywriters, but…
…we said no! We — and in this we are very alike — chose, and paid quite dearly for, the freedom to do what we wanted. We always believed in it, even in the moments — and there were some — when every road seemed closed.
But we never lost our way! When the chance came to write for the Oscar Mondadori guides, the firm was off again at full speed! Our friendship grew stronger, along with our shared work project. Ours, in truth, is a sharing of life…
…for better and for worse! Together, we opted for a new adventure: television. We were given the chance to attend the RAI screenwriting courses taught by American tutors, and we seized it at once. That is how our experience with television and serial drama began, leading us to tackle different genres, from comedy to romance, from 'legal' to period drama.
«You only understand the craft
by looking readers in the face.»
Let's just say we left nothing out: editors, drama supervisors, creative-writing teachers, literary reviewers… we have ranged far and wide, convinced that you never stop learning and that growth is the key to feeling alive. And here we are, more alive than ever!
Yes, but a piece is missing: our return to publishing! It all started with an essay by Janice Radway, Reading the Romance, which we were asked to translate and annotate — a 1970s text on why women read love stories. From there began our rediscovery of today's romance world, which had many surprises in store for us.
We discovered the most incredible cross-genre blends, an audience of fiercely committed women readers, a myriad of dedicated blogs, a direct relationship between authors and readers — in short, a world in great ferment. So, once again, we looked each other in the eye and said: why not? We were tired of writing melodrama, melodrama and more melodrama…
…we wanted lightness, to smile, to fall in love ourselves along with our characters, but without dramas and tragedies. In short, to write a fully fledged romantic comedy! And so we did. Our number-one 'creation', inspired by our experience as TV writers — fittingly titled 'Voglio un amore da soap!' — was published by Emma Books.
Then the rest followed in a cascade, including our print publisher, Sperling & Kupfer, which bet on us and on our determination to promote Italy and its excellence at all costs…
And here we are, back to our obsession with made in Italy! All our novels are set strictly in Italy — Tuscany, Capri, Ciociaria, Matera… — they have Italian protagonists and tell the story of Italy, its beauty and its cuisine. Every book also ends with a set of recipes, the winning idea of the duo's cook, Gabriella.
«Our novels are born here —
amid brainstorming, recipes and quarrels.»
True. Cooking is another of my great passions, and I thought of putting it to use in our novels too. We always say they are born in the kitchen! It's a bit our laboratory of ideas, where we brainstorm, compare notes, discuss, sometimes quarrel…
Yes, that happens too. But what matters is that we are firmly convinced that 'two heads think better than one' and, starting with our working method, it is something we never forget.
We pool ideas, feelings, emotions and, why not, problems — unresolved ones, perhaps. We talk them through, dig into the subject, think it over, and only at the end do we start writing the outline. Only once the point of view is shared, once we know exactly where we are heading. It is the same method we followed to return to another of our great passions: crime fiction with noir shades. Amazon Publishing released Chiedi al passato, the second volume of a crime series with two female detectives as protagonists: Emma&Kate. Theirs too, like ours, is a real team effort…
…where what counts is the victory of the team!
